Everyone knows current interest rates are low in comparison to the last 30 years, but how low are they in terms of human civilization? Turns out they are essentially at all time lows going back 5,000 years! Interest rates directly affect real estate markets as the cost of borrowing makes homes more or less expensive impacting how affordable they are. Since 66% of homeowners have a mortgage; movement in interest rates of even 1%-2% can signify major changes in home affordability. Put it this way; a 1% increase in the 30-year mortgage rate from 3% to 4% is equivalent to increasing the mortgage cost by 33%. If mortgage rates start rising look for home prices to slowly start to get soft.
