History Of Mediterranean-Style Homes For Sale
Mediterranean architecture separated off from its Spanish roots in the 1920s when palaces along the Mediterranean coasts of Spain, Greece, and Italy were first constructed. The architecture of those homes was brought to California and Florida thereafter and quickly gained popularity.
Many of the neighborhoods and homes you see built from the 1980s to the present are built in a Mediterranean style called "Neo Mediterranean," which is a more up-to-date standard for the style.
Characteristics Of Mediterranean Homes In Tucson
Terra Cotta Roof Tiles
In Tucson, these tiles are generally made from concrete and are an "S" type. They are almost always red in color, but some of the newer homes offer other colors.
Low-Pitched Roof
The standard for Mediterranean homes is a roof with a low pitch that allows water to be directed away from the home but does not make for a high or imposing stance from the street level.
Stucco
All Mediterranean homes in Tucson have a stucco exterior painted in a wide array of colors and schemes. Unlike Spanish homes that are generally always white, these homes provide the owner with an unlimited palette. Since stucco is a light concrete-based product, it can be painted or repainted any color at any time with ease.
Heavy Carved Wooden Doors
Typical of the Mediterranean home style is a double front door of solid wood, carved, and usually oversized. They are the hallmark of a well crafted Mediterranean home and need to be carefully maintained.
Arches
Typical of the style are arches over windows and doors. Arches are sometimes included in the patio roof lines as well. Usually, the arches are not as sharp or pronounced as in Spanish architecture, but they are still a big part of the Mediterranean style and feel of the home.
Columns
Mediterranean homes often make use of grand columns. These support interior roofs, exterior patios, or can be solely for pure decoration. This is borrowed from Italian architecture, but can be seen many times in Mediterranean homes as well.

I would highly recommend Michael for any residential real estate need. I listed my home to test the market and received a contract on day 5 for just $2,400 less than my asking price. I was not prepared for such a quick sale! —Falena Reed
