An Interesting Fact about U of A

When the University of Arizona was originally awarded to the city, Tucson was largely disinterested. They viewed it as valueless to the future of the city. The people of Tucson wanted the territory's mental hospital awarded instead, which would have brought in a $100,000 allocation, while the university only brought in $25,000. Tucson was so disappointed with the university, no one was willing to provide land for it. The citizens of Tucson were about ready to return the money awarded for the initial construction until two gamblers and a saloon keeper decided to donate the land. Today, we're glad they did.
